Parsons had begun a series of groundbreaking programs in fashion, interior design, and graphic design that combined art concepts with industrial design. The Goldstein sisters adapted Parsons’ modern concept of design to their teaching at the University and to their textbook Art in Every day Life (1925, four editions,11 reprintings). From Vera Neumann to Vera Wang, from sportswear to evening wear, and from monsters to space suits—our previous exhibitions feature an array of designers and objects. The Goldstein Museum of Design is dedicated to sharing the value of design through its 34,000+ multidisciplinary objects. From the late 1920s through the 1950s, Art in Every day Life was used in classes at colleges and universities across the country, helping countless students gain the ability to recognize and create design harmony in their lives. The James Goldstein house, besides serving as home to the elusive businessman, has also been used by various showbiz producers and directors. The Sheats-Goldstein Residence, as the property is now known, still maintains all the original designs and touches that John Lautner carefully created. What emerged was a two-decades-long partnership to remodel the house, which ended when John Lautner passed away in 1994.

Established in 1976, and named in honor of the Goldstein sisters, The Goldstein Museum of Design (GMD) is a research center in the College of Design and the only design museum in the Upper Midwest. Through our teaching collection of 36,000+ multidisciplinary objects and free, public exhibitions on the St. Paul and East Bank campuses, we advance learning in design history and practice for students and the greater community. Numbering over 22,000 items, and dating as far back as 1760, apparel and accessories make up the largest part of the museum’s collection. In 2004, the International Institute of Minnesota donated to the GMD 659 pieces of clothing from around the world.

GMD's research center, staff, collections, and main gallery are based in McNeal Hall on the St. Paul campus. The building links an original Home Economics hall (pictured above), where Harriet and Vetta Goldstein taught from 1910–1949, with an addition from 1976 (pictured left), the year the museum was established. Businessman James Goldstein has been the sole owner of the Sheats-Goldstein house since he purchased it in 1972. He continues to spend time at the residence, but also often rents it out for photoshoots or as filming location for Hollywood movies or TV shows. Back in the day, he’s also said to have had an affair with American actress, singer, and Playboy Playmate Jayne Mansfield, who was married to someone else at the time. Still, he never married, and he has no children, which is why the decision to donate his unique home to LACMA came naturally.
